Waiting For My Prince to Come + Free Download
I feel like I can pretty much trace the trajectory of my life through Prince songs. It was all "Raspberry Berets" and "Little Red Corvettes" in 1999.
And now, 13 years later, it's maybe a "Sign ‘O' the Times" that I haven't seen much "Purple Rain" in a long time. The only thing funky around here lately is the diaper bin, which is why I'm thrilled about this.
I saw Prince perform live at the Hollywood Bowl 12 years ago, and I'm still recovering from it. He was mind-blowing, amazing, incredible, exhilarating and hands-down, the best musical performer I've ever seen. I went with my friend Erik; we both had near heart attacks and were sore and hoarse the next day from dancing and screaming. Yes, we are those kinds of fans.
Five or so years ago, I was set to see him again-he'd made some deal with one of the big casinos and I was going to fly to Vegas and celebrate a friend's 40th birthday. Sure, we had all sorts of plans for fancy dinners and decadence, but, really, it was all about Prince. We were crazy excited. Then, a week before the trip, Prince cancelled the show. It was devastating news.
It sucks to be stood up by Prince, left like a loser holding an airline ticket and an expensive hotel reservation. And while I'm not one to hold a grudge, listening to his music after that was bittersweet. That is, until I had a particularly bad day and crawled in bed with my best friend and listened to Purple Rain on vinyl. That day Prince once again worked his powers on me and I realized I'd forgive him for anything. And I'll wait as long as it takes till he chooses to grace me with his presence again. Until then, baby and I can listen to his grooves together.
