Things I Love Because of My Mom
Our parents influence us the moment we’re brought into the world. So much of who we are, how we act, what we like can be attributed directly to our folks.
Fortunately for me almost everything I can tie back to my parents is good — almost. (I think I’ll rule out swearing sailor-pirate-drunkard as a good thing). To commemorate my mom this holiday, here are few of my favorite things she passed on to me.
Gone with the Wind: Together, my mom and I share an unbreakable love of GWTW. She looks like Scarlett O’Hara to me, too, which only lends to my obsession.
Baking: My mom is an AMAZING BAKER (her mom is, too, so I’ll credit my desire to fire up an oven to “Gramma Gramma” as well). Never in my life has there not been a dessert on our kitchen countertop at home.
Fantasy/Science Fiction: Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Ray Bradbury, Neil Gaiman, etc. If it weren’t for my mom loving sci-fi/fantasy books, movies, and shows, I doubt I’d have the same love for it I do now. She’s a total geek and she taught me to embrace that part of myself, too.
Music: Music is important to both my parents, but the way my mom described herself discovering more than just the polka music my grandparents played in the ’60s reminds me of how I started finding my own taste when I was a kid. Only difference: She rebelled with rock ’n’ roll and I rebelled with pop punk and emo. Haha. One thing that did cross over to me was rock . . . I just had to listen to Taking Back Sunday and My Chem for a little bit, get it outta my system. Some of our favorites: Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Boston, and Bryan Adams.
What are some things you love because of your mom?Think about it, there might be more than you even realize!
