DIY Valentine's Heart Cake
If you're anything like me, you have a lot of kitchenware. Baking sheets, casserole dishes, pizza pans, woks, muffin tins and every size and shape cake pan imaginable . . . all except a heart.
And you can't make a Valentine's Day cake that isn't in the shape of a heart! (Obviously, you can, I'm just being a twinge dramatic.)
I was just going to go break down and buy a heart tin for the sake of convenience but since I can be pretty resourceful when I get desperate, I decided to try to work with what I've got. And what I've got is an 8x8 circle pan and an 8x8 square pan.
So today, we're going to share how to make your own heart cake!
Rockabye Grrl and I teamed up to make these fabulous heart-shaped cakes for everyone at the RB office to enjoy.

And here's our Valentine's Playlist to enjoy while you bake!
Ingredients Use our Red Velvet cake recipe below or just use a box cake mix. 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp salt 2 tbsp cocoa powder 2 cups sugar 1 cup vegetable oil 2 eggs 1 cup buttermilk 2 tsp vanilla 1-2 oz red food coloring 1 tsp white distilled vinegar ½ cup of brewed, plain coffee Directions 1. Heat over to 325°. 2. Grease circle and square pans. 3. In bowl, whisk dry ingredients together (flour, baking soda and powder, cocoa and salt.) Set aside. 4. In larger bowl, mix sugar and vegetable oil. 5. Add in eggs, buttermilk, vanilla and food coloring until combined. 6. Stir in white vinegar. 7. Combine the wet and dry ingredients slowly, adding a bit at a time and mixing after each addition until combined. 8. Pour batter evenly into each pan. 9. Bake on center rack for 30-40 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Do not over bake. 10. Let cool completely on cooling rack. 11. Once cooled, remove cakes from pans Heart Instructions 1. Place square cake on table or flat surface. 2. Cut circle cake in half 3. Arrange on adjacent sides of the square. If necessary, trim the half circles cakes as needed to make the perfect heart. (We made two heart cakes so that's why you're seeing the white cake in the photo tutorial to the right). 4. You have a heart cake! Frost and decorate as desired!
